Daily Light's Morning Reading

He preserveth the way of his saints.PROV. 2:8.

The Lord your God . . . went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.—As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: so the Lord alone did lead him.—The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand.—Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.—For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous; but the way of the ungodly shall perish.—We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.—With us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles.

the Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy.

Spurgeon's Morning Reading

“Ye must be born again.”

John 3:7

Regeneration is a subject which lies at the very basis of salvation, and we should be very diligent to take heed that we really are “born again,” for there are many who fancy they are, who are not. Be assured that the name of a Christian is not the nature of a Christian; and that being born in a Christian land, and being recognized as professing the Christian religion is of no avail whatever, unless there be something more added to it—the being “born again,” is a matter so mysterious, that human words cannot describe it. “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.” Nevertheless, it is a change which is known and felt: known by works of holiness, and felt by a gracious experience. This great work is supernatural. It is not an operation which a man performs for himself: a new principle is infused, which works in the heart, renews the soul, and affects the entire man. It is not a change of my name, but a renewal of my nature, so that I am not the man I used to be, but a new man in Christ Jesus. To wash and dress a corpse is a far different thing from making it alive: man can do the one, God alone can do the other. If you have then, been “born again,” your acknowledgment will be, “O Lord Jesus, the everlasting Father, thou art my spiritual Parent; unless thy Spirit had breathed into me the breath of a new, holy, and spiritual life, I had been to this day ‘dead in trespasses and sins.’ My heavenly life is wholly derived from thee, to thee I ascribe it. ‘My life is hid with Christ in God.’ It is no longer I who live, but Christ who liveth in me.” May the Lord enable us to be well assured on this vital point, for to be unregenerate is to be unsaved, unpardoned, without God, and without hope.

Old Testament Chapter a Day - Zephaniah 3

Zephaniah 3

3. Future of Jerusalem

1 Woe to the city of oppressors,
   rebellious and defiled!
2 She obeys no one,
   she accepts no correction.
She does not trust in the LORD,
   she does not draw near to her God.
3 Her officials within her
   are roaring lions;
her rulers are evening wolves,
   who leave nothing for the morning.
4 Her prophets are unprincipled;
   they are treacherous people.
Her priests profane the sanctuary
   and do violence to the law.
5 The LORD within her is righteous;
   he does no wrong.
Morning by morning he dispenses his justice,
   and every new day he does not fail,
   yet the unrighteous know no shame.

   Jerusalem Remains Unrepentant

    6 “I have destroyed nations;
   their strongholds are demolished.
I have left their streets deserted,
   with no one passing through.
Their cities are laid waste;
   they are deserted and empty.
7 Of Jerusalem I thought,
   ‘Surely you will fear me
   and accept correction!’
Then her place of refuge Or her sanctuary would not be destroyed,
   nor all my punishments come upon Or all those I appointed over her.
But they were still eager
   to act corruptly in all they did.
8 Therefore wait for me,”
   declares the LORD,
   “for the day I will stand up to testify. Septuagint and Syriac; Hebrew will rise up to plunder
I have decided to assemble the nations,
   to gather the kingdoms
and to pour out my wrath on them—
   all my fierce anger.
The whole world will be consumed
   by the fire of my jealous anger.

Restoration of Israel’s Remnant

    9 “Then I will purify the lips of the peoples,
   that all of them may call on the name of the LORD
   and serve him shoulder to shoulder.
10 From beyond the rivers of Cush That is, the upper Nile region
   my worshipers, my scattered people,
   will bring me offerings.
11 On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame
   for all the wrongs you have done to me,
because I will remove from you
   your arrogant boasters.
Never again will you be haughty
   on my holy hill.
12 But I will leave within you
   the meek and humble.
The remnant of Israel
   will trust in the name of the LORD.
13 They will do no wrong;
   they will tell no lies.
A deceitful tongue
   will not be found in their mouths.
They will eat and lie down
   and no one will make them afraid.”

    14 Sing, Daughter Zion;
   shout aloud, Israel!
Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,
   Daughter Jerusalem!
15 The LORD has taken away your punishment,
   he has turned back your enemy.
The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you;
   never again will you fear any harm.
16 On that day
   they will say to Jerusalem,
“Do not fear, Zion;
   do not let your hands hang limp.
17 The LORD your God is with you,
   the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
   in his love he will no longer rebuke you,
   but will rejoice over you with singing.”

    18 “I will remove from you
   all who mourn over the loss of your appointed festivals,
   which is a burden and reproach for you.
19 At that time I will deal
   with all who oppressed you.
I will rescue the lame;
   I will gather the exiles.
I will give them praise and honor
   in every land where they have suffered shame.
20 At that time I will gather you;
   at that time I will bring you home.
I will give you honor and praise
   among all the peoples of the earth
when I restore your fortunes Or I bring back your captives
   before your very eyes,” says the LORD.

New Testament in Four Years - Matthew 27:57-28:61

Matthew 27:57-28:61

27. Conviction and Crucifixion

57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

Psalm a Day - Psalm 40

Psalm 40

40. Psalm 40

1 I waited patiently for the LORD;
   he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
   out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
   and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 He put a new song in my mouth,
   a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
   and put their trust in him.

    4 Blessed is the one
   who trusts in the LORD,
who does not look to the proud,
   to those who turn aside to false gods. Or to lies
5 Many, LORD my God,
   are the wonders you have done,
   the things you planned for us.
None can compare with you;
   were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
   they would be too many to declare.

    6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—
   but my ears you have opened Hebrew; some Septuagint manuscripts but a body you have prepared for me
   burnt offerings and sin offerings Or purification offerings you did not require.
7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
   it is written about me in the scroll. Or come / with the scroll written for me
8 I desire to do your will, my God;
   your law is within my heart.”

    9 I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly;
   I do not seal my lips, LORD,
   as you know.
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
   I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help.
I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness
   from the great assembly.

    11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD;
   may your love and faithfulness always protect me.
12 For troubles without number surround me;
   my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
   and my heart fails within me.
13 Be pleased to save me, LORD;
   come quickly, LORD, to help me.

    14 May all who want to take my life
   be put to shame and confusion;
may all who desire my ruin
   be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
   be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you
   rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
   “The LORD is great!”

    17 But as for me, I am poor and needy;
   may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
   you are my God, do not delay.
