Biography

Samuel Hopkins was born in Connecticut in 1721. Upon graduating from Yale College, Hopkins studied with John Edwards in Massachusetts. In 1742 he was licensed to preach. He was ordained and served a small church in Housatonic, Massachusetts. For the last thirty years of his life, he served the First Congregational Church in Rhode Island. Hopkins was a passionate abolitionist. In 1802 Hopkins was awarded a D.D. from Yale. The following year Hopkins died in Newport at the age of 82.
