Daily Light's Evening Reading

Give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.PSA. 97:12.

The heavens are not clean in his sight. How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?—Yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. How much less man, that is a worm?

Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness?—Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts.

As he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.—Partakers of his holiness.

The temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.—What manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, . . . without spot, and blameless?

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Spurgeon's Evening Reading

“That he may set him with princes.”

Psalm 113:8

Our spiritual privileges are of the highest order. “Among princes” is the place of select society. “Truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” Speak of select society, there is none like this! “We are a chosen generation, a peculiar people, a royal priesthood.” “We are come unto the general assembly and church of the first-born, whose names are written in heaven.” The saints have courtly audience: princes have admittance to royalty when common people must stand afar off. The child of God has free access to the inner courts of heaven. “For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” “Let us come boldly,” says the apostle, “to the throne of the heavenly grace.” Among princes there is abundant wealth, but what is the abundance of princes compared with the riches of believers? for “all things are yours, and ye are Christ's, and Christ is God's.” “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” Princes have peculiar power. A prince of heaven’s empire has great influence: he wields a sceptre in his own domain; he sits upon Jesus’ throne, for “He hath made us kings and priests unto God, and we shall reign forever and ever.” We reign over the united kingdom of time and eternity. Princes, again, have special honour. We may look down upon all earth-born dignity from the eminence upon which grace has placed us. For what is human grandeur to this, “He hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus”? We share the honour of Christ, and compared with this, earthly splendours are not worth a thought. Communion with Jesus is a richer gem than ever glittered in imperial diadem. Union with the Lord is a coronet of beauty outshining all the blaze of imperial pomp.

Old Testament Chapter a Day - Deuteronomy 19

Deuteronomy 19

19. Cities of Refuge

Laws concerning the Cities of Refuge

19

When the Lord your God has cut off the nations whose land the Lord your God is giving you, and you have dispossessed them and settled in their towns and in their houses,2you shall set apart three cities in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.3You shall calculate the distances and divide into three regions the land that the Lord your God gives you as a possession, so that any homicide can flee to one of them.

4 Now this is the case of a homicide who might flee there and live, that is, someone who has killed another person unintentionally when the two had not been at enmity before:5Suppose someone goes into the forest with another to cut wood, and when one of them swings the ax to cut down a tree, the head slips from the handle and strikes the other person who then dies; the killer may flee to one of these cities and live.6But if the distance is too great, the avenger of blood in hot anger might pursue and overtake and put the killer to death, although a death sentence was not deserved, since the two had not been at enmity before.7Therefore I command you: You shall set apart three cities.

8 If the Lord your God enlarges your territory, as he swore to your ancestors—and he will give you all the land that he promised your ancestors to give you,9provided you diligently observe this entire commandment that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God and walking always in his ways—then you shall add three more cities to these three,10so that the blood of an innocent person may not be shed in the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, thereby bringing bloodguilt upon you.

11 But if someone at enmity with another lies in wait and attacks and takes the life of that person, and flees into one of these cities,12then the elders of the killer’s city shall send to have the culprit taken from there and handed over to the avenger of blood to be put to death.13Show no pity; you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, so that it may go well with you.

Property Boundaries

14 You must not move your neighbor’s boundary marker, set up by former generations, on the property that will be allotted to you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

Law concerning Witnesses

15 A single witness shall not suffice to convict a person of any crime or wrongdoing in connection with any offense that may be committed. Only on the evidence of two or three witnesses shall a charge be sustained.16If a malicious witness comes forward to accuse someone of wrongdoing,17then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the Lord, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days,18and the judges shall make a thorough inquiry. If the witness is a false witness, having testified falsely against another,19then you shall do to the false witness just as the false witness had meant to do to the other. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.20The rest shall hear and be afraid, and a crime such as this shall never again be committed among you.21Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

New Testament in Four Years - 2 Corinthians 6:3-10

2 Corinthians 6:3-10

6. Reconciliation

3We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry,4but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities,5beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger;6by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love,7truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left;8in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true;9as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed;10as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Psalm a Day - Psalm 8

Psalm 8

8. Psalm 8

Psalm 8

Divine Majesty and Human Dignity

To the leader: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David.

1

O Lord, our Sovereign,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.

2

Out of the mouths of babes and infants

you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,

to silence the enemy and the avenger.

3

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars that you have established;

4

what are human beings that you are mindful of them,

mortals that you care for them?

5

Yet you have made them a little lower than God,

and crowned them with glory and honor.

6

You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;

you have put all things under their feet,

7

all sheep and oxen,

and also the beasts of the field,

8

the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,

whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

9

O Lord, our Sovereign,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!
