Famous for her series of mystery novels, Dorothy Sayers is not often remembered
for her role as a Christian writer. Catholic Tales and Christian Songs is a
collection of themed poems and versed plays written by Sayers about different
characters and events in Christian history. Several of Sayers' poems center on
the powerful influence of sin, and many poems in this collection reference
Judas's sinful kiss of betrayal. In one of the volume's final entries, The
Mocking of Christ, Sayers reveals the sins of pride and sloth demonstrated by
those who mocked Jesus at his crucifixion. Because Catholic Tales and
Christian Songs was only Sayers' second publication, many of the themes
featured in these pieces are revisited and further developed in her later
Christian writings. The devotional pieces in this collection give readers
invaluable insight into Sayers' spiritual thoughts.
