Biography

William Temple was born in Exeter, England, in 1881. He championed ecumenicalism. He also labored to bring reform to the way laborers were treated. Ordained into the priesthood, Temple sought to bring about change in the governing of the Church of England. Moving up in the ranks of the church, Temple became the Archbishop of Canterbury. He promoted the idea that church and state do not operate independently but the church has the right, if not the obligation, to speak out about political issues. Temple died at the at the age of 63 in 1944.
