Biography

There are not too many people who haven’t heard of Charles Dickens. As the author of such classics as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations, he is an English icon. His books are required reading in many literature classes. Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers was the work that caught the attention of reading public of many countries and created desire for more of his works. Dickens was the master of serial novels. His works reflect his passion for championing the underdog, the poor, the social outcasts, and other unexpected “Heroes.” Born in 1812, he would become a factory worker at the age of 12. Over his 58 years he would raise ten children and author numerous journal articles, short stories, novels, and letters. Dickens died on June 9, 1870.
