Biography

Frances Brown (Frances Browne) was born in 1816. Tragically she became blind at one and a half years old due to smallpox. Her thirst for learning drove her to memorize the lessons she heard her 11 siblings reviewing orally. She wrote many published poems and stories. Due to her writings, she was dubbed “The Blind Poetess of Ulster. Many of her works, such as her Granny’s Wonderful Chair first published in 1856, are still published today. Brown died on August 21, 1879.
