John 2

re: reply to the noncommittal Christ

The misunderstanding of Jesus as a certain type of Messiah is a topic thoroughly examined by John's gospel. I was thinking about it last night--the metaphors of light and darkness which we are familiar with as, usually, a metaphor of sin and salvation, function in John also as, and perhaps primarily as, a metaphor of ignorance vs. understanding. Darkness is usually associated with people who cannot understand; they are blind, they cannot see, the darkness cannot apprehend, etc. Yet the people in the light can see, just as it is easier to see in the daytime. Maybe this has been abundantly obvious to other people, but it has reordered some of the Johannine discussion for me, giving it new dimensions and avenues of consideration.
