Missions and Acts - Covenantal Approach?

Kaitiaki's picture

Basically this is just a "what do we learn about the Church from Acts?" thread. As we watch Paul and Barnabas and then Paul and Silas building the Church in Acts, what can we learn about their concept of the Church as a whole? Robert suggested my original plan was too cumbersome so asked me to create new threads.

Thread Moderator - Kaitiaki

Jesus said he was sent to seek and saved the lost sheep of Israel - yet he still had a place for Gentiles who were present when he was preaching. When the new Church began in Acts i took a sign from God before the Apostles were prepared to take the Gospel to the Gentiles at all. Then when Paul did, he went first to the Jews and then to the Greeks. We explore this aspect of his method of missions.

The process Paul used (The Jews first and then the Greeks) may set out a policy we should keep in mind for missions outreach. Do you think this was a deliberate policy? Do you think he began with those who, not only should have been the easiest to reach with the truth but also, were the ones who should join with him in the further work of outreach? What part did their greater accountability under the covenant have to play in his use of this policy?

Christianity as a Jewish sect? Yes, The Genesis of The Church

Brother Clark,

Let me address your comments which were originally made by Frank Viola and you used his work to address my post about The Nazarene Sect of Judaism which followed Yeshua(Jesus).

Clark,
1. Jerusalem is The Center of G-d's work on earth.

Lee,
Yes. Jerusalem is always going to be The Center of G-d's Work here on Earth. On this Holy Mountain, Abraham offer up his only son at G-d's request, which was a shadowing of what was to come. This was also where G-d offer up His Only Son Yeshua(Jesus) as G-d's Plan for The Redemption of Man, the answer to the shadow of G-d's Provision given to Abraham.

Clark,
The twelve apostles are the only authority for what the true gospel is and they were commissioned by Christ Himself. Paul did not come from Jerusalem, and he was not commissioned by Christ.

Lee,
Yes and No. The Great Commission is for all those who are Called of G-d by Faith and come under G-d's Grace. The ones who were personally selected by The Christ and Commissioned to go into all of the world as G-d Fishers of Men, with The Message of G-d's Love. They were to make Disciples of all men, to The Jew first and then to The Gentile. They were to baptize those who by Faith answered G-d's Call into The Kingdom of G-d by their Confession and then to teach them to be Fishers of Men as well.

Saul, a Pharisee, was personally Called to be a Disciple by G-d on the road to Damascus, from Acts 9. Saul was also blinded in the process of personally experiencing this Supernatural Call by G-d on his life. G-d, in the Fullness of His Glory spoke to Saul directly by name and charged him, "Saul, why persecute Me?" G-d directed Saul to meet with Ananias, The Leadership of The Church in Damascus. But The L-rd said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel..." G-d changed Saul's name to Paul, a new name that was written down in Glory, after Saul's Conversion to Faith by the light of G-d working in and washing him mind.

Clark.
2. Paul's gospel is deficient.

Lee.
Wrong! Frank Viola dismisses the fact that The Holy Spirit is to be Our Source and Our Guide by his own words.

Clark.
The Jerusalem leaders believe in the G-d-given practice of circumcision and observing the Law and the traditions...Believing in Jesus coupled with obeying the Law of Moses justifies and sanctifies a man before G-d.

Lee.
Yes Clark, some of The Jewishness is not easily dismissed and so remains intrinsic until The Conviction of The Holy Spirit changes our ways unto His Ways. But also remember that our L-rd, Yeshua(Jesus), was also circumcised on the 8th day. Yeshua(Jesus) was also very Jewish as most Jews are. Yeshua(Jesus) also went unto The Temple on The Sabbath Day as well. You must remember Clark, that a Jew is always going to be a Jew first and what ever next you want to add to the mix will be added. Can you change your physical birth right? No! But you can change your direction Spiritually and receive Spiritual Life. This is what we all must do.

Circumcision was what G-d required of every Jewish male baby of 8 days, or on a male's Conversion to Judaism after following the steps that it takes to come to That Understanding.

The Torah was given to The Jews through Moses for Guidance and Light from G-d in how they were to live daily for G-d. G-d is our only Sanctification, He makes us Holy, we can not become Holy by deeds alone. It is G-d that works within His Creation and brings Spiritual Life into a dead mans bones. Only G-d can cause us to turn our hearts unto Him.

Sanctification is a process that G-d brings to a Believers Life. It comes through daily study of The Work coupled with Prayer and fellowship with those who are in The Family of G-d(Community). Following in the steps of The Master, brings us close to G-d's Sanctification of our life in this World.

Clark.
3. Peter is the chief apostle among the Twelve.

Lee.
Yes that is what Yeshua(Jesus) said. "And the gates of Hell will not prevail"

Clark.
Paul had the arrogance to rebuke the apostle Peter to his face! This proves that Paul is a freelancer who is engaging in an independent work apart form the ministry of the Twelve.

Lee..
Isn't that what a Pharisee of Pharisees is to do. It probably took many years to get his attitude under check from G-d.

Clark.
The secret of Antioch's power and mission came from the unchallenged centrality, supremacy and Headship of Jesus Christ.

Lee.
Yes. Not only that but in Syria there were many manifold differences above all other locations of The Church at Large. Women were given place within the Sanctuary to worship to sing praises and to be equal with their male counterpart in The Work of The Kingdom of G-d through Worship and Praise with in The Place. Women were lifted up higher in Antioch than in any other Christian Church established by the Disciples. Yes many saints of G-d were blessed through The Church in Antioch.

Clark.
Can it be that Jerusalem over-localized and over-centralized the power of the church into the hands of a few leaders (pillars) rather than depend on the Headship of Jesus Christ being exercised throughout His body as He wills and chooses?

Lee.
No. I think you are talking about The Same Church Clark. History points out that The Church in Jerusalem fled North before Roman Armies moved into The Land and destroyed Jerusalem and The Temple in 70AD, and finally arriving in Antioch. Today it is known as The Antiochian Orthodox Church.

Clark.
"And He has put all things under His feet and has appointed Him the universal and supreme Head of the church (a Headship execised throughout the church), which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all--for in that body lives the full measure of Him Who makes everything complete, and Who fills everything everywhere with Himself." (Eph. 1:22-23)

Lee.
Yes! Amen! The Church, The Bride of Christ, is The Personal abode, The Temple that is not made with human hands but is filled to overflowing with The Holy Spirit to be a witness and a testimony to The World of what G-d is doing in The World through having Jesus in us. Yeshua(Jesus) is The Cornerstone of our foundation in Faith.

Lee...
