Faith in Extra Biblical Revelations?

De Maria's picture

Mike Kirby asked this question in the faith and works thread. It sounded like a change of venue, so I posted it here:
Faith in extra biblical revelations?

The Scriptures warn us that extra biblical revelations may not be from God.

2 Corinthians 11:13-15 (King James Version)

13For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
But Scripture does not forbid us from receiving and believing them if we have discerned that they are from God:

1 John 4 1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1 Thessalonians 5:21
21Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

Mike says,

The doctrine that I am receiving here is that the canonized saints that received a special revelation that they were saved received it by extra biblical revelation.

Correct.

In other words, I understand RCC (and you) to say that, there is a posibility of it happening,

Of what happening? Of being assured of salvation by God? Yes, there is a possibility of it happening.

but, it didn't happen because they had faith in the writtten Word of God..

It is the Word of God that tells us that God can do anything. Therefore, this part of your statement is wrong.

otherwise it would be attainable by any christian who worked at it...

What? Salvation or assurance of salvation? They are two different things.

Is that accurate?

Your statement is too complicated for me to understand. I did my best above but you seem to confuse "salvation" with the "assurance of salvation".

If it is, then would I be safe to say that the "faith" those canonized saints had wasn't due to the Word of God that we have on record today.

The faith of the canonized Saints is due to God.

I understand that faith must come from the Word of God.

What do you mean by "Word of God"? Do you mean the Bible?

We don't confine the Word of God to a book.

"Faith then cometh by hearing; and hearing by the word of Christ." Romans 10:17

Work with me on this ... I am really trying to understand you.

Sure, but it seems to be a different topic, so I'll start a different thread.

See me at the "Extra Biblical revelation" thread.

Sincerely,

De Maria
