Here is a true anecdote told by my mom regarding Vatican's real estate power grab. It is regarding a bishop who had a craze for building religious constructions. Soon after finishing the parish building of St-Eugene in Granby, Québec, that bishop from St-Hyacinte decided that there now should be one built 2 blocks away. We are taking some of the highest calibre of massive construction and architechture of all time here.
My mom described the scene of that announcement with:

"If only the bishop could have heard the men swear on the door steps of the church on their way out of finding out that they now were going to have to pay and to sweat for another one of those unneeded sites."

In Québec, the swear words are all made by spoofing the Vaticans symbols like tabernacle, chalice, baptism, sacrement and so on...and as my anecdote shows, it was the clergy who taugh Québecois to get so mad as to turn on their religious teaching to vent their wrath...

Superstition and liturgy amounts to same thing in my experience of Vatican's teachings and practices in Québec.
