The Book of Ezra Chapter 4, Opposition by The Elamites

Most of this Chapter will cover the opposition who see this new threat of power which The Jews seem to have as they work on the restoration of The Temple with Cyrus,Xerxes and Artaxerxes. Work comes to a stop until the Second year of reign of Darius, King of Persia.

Names like Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabbl, Rehum, Shimshai, The Elamites, those whom Osnappaar deported to Sumaria are now causing a slow down in Jerusalem with the restoration of The Temple.

Ezra 4:13-14, The Shift in time continues...

As we read on with this Aramaic accusation, of the Jews who are in Judah, we will see more of what they, think. Lets read Ezra 4:13-14,

V13 Let it now be known to the king that, if this city is built and the walls completed, they will not pay tax, tribute, or custom, and the king's treasury will be diminished. V14 Now because we receive support from the palace, it was not proper for us to see the king's dishonor; therefore we have sent and informed the king,

So the accusation is, The King of Persia, Xerxes, will not Get his taxes, customs and tribute if the walls are allowed to be built by the people of Judah whom Cyrus had ask to build him a house for G-d. There is another little subtraction to the moneys with a pointing to a diminished treasury also.

Another reason is added in V14 with a point of concern, because they also receive from someone in the form of agreement. It would be dishonest for them not to have reported this accusation to him about the Jews and the securing of the walls.

The Jewish Study Bible brings out V14 as: Now since we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not right that we should see the king dishonored, we have written to advise the king of this.

This last statement is a signifying expression of a common interest among allies. Somewhere in the past there must have been an oath taken and solemnized with the partaking of a common meal together over this concern.

They, the accusers, are asking Xerxes to check the records for this common point of agreement in the past.
