What is Sin?

I've heard so many competing definitions, and I'd really like to have a solid answer--what is sin?

Can Christians live above it?
Are Christians forgiven when they do it?
Do Christians lose salvation when they commit it?

If you've a good answer, please share it.

If you go back,

...jwmcmac, and read my post more carefully you will see that I am not contesting saints. The apostles called many people saints. Paul spoke in this wise concerning those he persecuted.

"...and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them." Acts 26:10 (KJV)

You are speaking of saints as those who have passed on. But isn't the question asking about those who remain alive and left behind? What are you thoughts on that perspective?
