What is Sin?

I've heard so many competing definitions, and I'd really like to have a solid answer--what is sin?

Can Christians live above it?
Are Christians forgiven when they do it?
Do Christians lose salvation when they commit it?

If you've a good answer, please share it.

Okay, but you must admit

...that the doctrine of Purgatory has everything to do with satisfying the temporal punishment owing for sins committed and that indulgences are at least one method of buying a person's soul out of Purgatory or shortening the time spent there. And, the thought expressed was to do penance to preserve them from hell. They go to hell because someone doesn't pray for them or do penance for them. Penance has to do with expiation of sin, does it not.

So I think I had good reason to be confused. But now I understand what you were saying.

"Iniquitas mentita est sibi"
