The Empire Strikes Back (Revelation 13)

Some good stuff in here--the Beast, his mark, the False Prophet. This should be an interesting chapter.

Rev 13 explaining the earth, the beast, and America

jq,

"Rev 13 a beast with lamb-like horns arises out of the earth which could well symbolize a peaceful nation like America which arose from a wilderness of sorts where no nations existed. Her two great powers, or horns, are guaranteed by Her constitution: Civil and Religious liberty. These have made her the greatest nation on earth."

For instance this assertion. Is this supported by historians, theologians and other Christians, or is this your private interpretation?

This part is from the Bible:

Rev 13 a beast with lamb-like horns arises out of the earth

This next part is my proposition, not assertion:

which could well symbolize a peaceful nation like America which arose from a wilderness of sorts where no nations existed. Her two great powers, or horns, are guaranteed by Her constitution: Civil and Religious liberty. These have made her the greatest nation on earth.

The language employed "which could well symbolize" makes it clear that I am proposing this as a plausible interpretation and not an assertion.

Now, is there any need to prove that America arose from a land free of nations? Is there any need to demonstrate that her two greatest powers are civil and religious freedom? Or, is there any need to prove she has become the greatest nation on earth? No, I think all that is a given.

So the only thing that needs to be proven is whether or not Rev 13 is speaking of America. That is a study we are currently involved in but I doubt we will go into that much detail here. What I have offered is this: that if you follow the time line and the context of the passages America comes right on time.

A quick history lesson.

Daniel speaks of four kingdoms in several chapters. Once they are referred to as Gold, bronze, silver, iron. Another time they are referred to as a lion, a bear, a leopard, and then a beast (a nondescript animal). History tells us that Babylon was overthrown by Media-Persia which was overthrown by Greece which was overthrown by Rome. The four world kingdoms.

Babylon - Gold - Lion
Media-Persia - Bronze - Bear
Greece - Silver - Leopard
Rome - Iron - Beast

Have you ever heard of "The Iron Monarchy of Rome?"

In Revelation 13 the nations are listed in reverse order: Beast, Leopard, Bear, Lion. This gives us the impression that while Daniel was standing in Babylon and looking forward to Rome, John was standing in Rome looking backward to Babylon. So this establishes the time period of Revelation 13. Then John speaks of the dragon giving the beast his power, seat, and great authority. And this beast suffers a deadly wound that is miraculously healed. All the world wonders after this beast and says who is like the beast and who can make war with the beast. This beast continues 1260 years (1 day = 1 year in prophetic time).

So we conclude that Rev 13 places us here... The Roman Empire fell around 476 A.D. Add to that 1260 years when the beast with the deadly wound ruled and you come to somewhere around 476 + 1260 A.D., or 1736. Now these are approximate dates for simplicities sake, but even they bring us very close to the time America was beginning to form as a Nation unto itself. The Constitution was ratified in 1776. A mere 40 years after this simple calculation.

Thus, the "earth" from which sprang forth a nation with two lamb-like horns. Horns representing power. And the power of the United States lies in Her Constitutions which guarantees civil and religious freedom. In other words, a country without a king, a church without a pope. And that has been the source of America's strength. That guarantees also the right of every person to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Not a monarchy. Neither a religio-politico union of church and state. A republic of free men! And that is why She rose to great power and has been blessed by God. "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." 2 Cor 3:17 (KJV)

If there is anything else I can answer for you, please ask and I will try. I hope I addressed the heart of your concern.
