Augustine and history as the unfolding of the Word

Did Augustine teach that the Word is the history of the Church? Schleiermacher taught that "It is only in the entire course of the historical development of the Church that [Christ] can be understood in his entirety." I find this implicit in some of Augustine's writings, but it doesn't seem to have been a fully developed doctrine with him.
