This thread is for the discussion of secular/pagan Xmas problems and thoughts. I used Xmas to differentiate this thread form the Christmas thread. To discuss the birth of Jesus please use the Christmas Thread.

Hello Dave,

I would have hoped you would have recanted your attribution to E. G. White. She merely repeated the claims of the church in her writings. What makes the statement contentious is that it is itself inaccurate and accuses Ellen White of pulling things from thin air.

And, in all fairness, if statements published in Catholic works are not attributed to the Catholic church and it is not responsible for their content, then we must be as gracious regarding the writing of Ellen White. So if it stands that, "the statement was by a Catholic, not the Catholic church", then it must also stand that "the statement was by an Adventist, not the Adventist church." Something to do with fairness and a goose and a gander.

Yet, we stand behind our publications. If we give permission to print then we ought to stand behind it or correct the error before reprinting. This is not the case, if Michael_legna is to be believed, in the Catholic church. What he has presented to our minds is a church which may print anything it desires and then back away from it by claiming it to be the opinions of a man and not the teachings of the church. What then can anyone believe coming from the Catholic publishing houses? They cannot be trusted. Oh, they may attach a Nihil Obstat ("nothing hinders"--which is to say it contains nothing heretical or against church teachings) and give their Imprimatur for it to be published but when convenience raises her head they will denounce it as the works of a man and not the church. But, the document in question was a Catechism which is the tool to teach converts church teachings. Catechisms are doctrinal manuals. Why allow this Catholic doctrinal manual to contain error and then reprint it for decades? Go figure!

Anyway, I know you did not intend to be contentious and you are always gracious. I accept your apology. However, you must not continue to hold this inaccurate understanding of this matter. (We can discuss elsewhere if needed).
