The Xmas Thread: Discussions on secular/pagan practices

Loutzenhiser's picture

This thread is for the discussion of secular/pagan Xmas problems and thoughts. I used Xmas to differentiate this thread form the Christmas thread. To discuss the birth of Jesus please use the Christmas Thread.

I personally have never participated in Christmas idolatries and am not aware of anyone in my circles who does.

I make no excuses. There is no excuse for idolatry. But if we have no sinful intention or do no sinful deed then all is well and good.

The sin of idolatry is in the human heart and motive. It does not reside in some objective sense in any tradition or ritual unless that tradition contains blasphemous words or engages us in evil acts (murder, adultery, etc.).

It is intent (why am I doing this?) and result (does it move me God-ward?). One man sees the beauty of the sunset and bows in worship to the One Who made it. The idolater in response to viewing the same sunset bows offering false worship to the sun. Same 'ritual', totally different in intent and result, one godly the other sinful.

So deck the halls, throw on the Yule log, decorate that tree, put lights in the yard, send cards, give gifts, hang the mistletoe (and kiss your sweetheart), stuff stockings, sing carols, eat and drink heartily! Enjoy the goodness of the season and celebrate all of these good gifts of God with thanksgiving and rejoicing. Do all in honour of the Christ and in loving worship to the new born King. You can never enjoy God's world too much. You can abuse it. You can misuse it. But you can never enjoy it too much.

Do not let some heathen idolater spoil your fun.
