Can you explain how this is accomplished since the idea of idolatry being linked to Christmas is central to this debate? I mean, if we make reasonable excuses for every idolatrous practices then how will we recognize it as sin or as motivated by sin?

Mind you; I am not at present arguing it is idolatry, I am merely pointing out what I see as a spiritual paradox in your advice.
