Proofreading

Loutzenhiser's picture

The basic goal is to make the on-line edition match the print edition -- errors and all. We aren't updating spelling or usage or changing it to match modern American usage.

When the page images are available, we can refer to the page images and make corrections with confidence. Sometimes the page images are not available at the CCEL, but they are available at Google Books. In that case you can search for some words on the page and try to find a source of page images.

When page images are not available, the goal is to fix obvious typographical errors but not to make changes that are unlikely to be a result of scanning or typing errors.

The goal is to proof all the pages of each book at least twice. At that point we'll consider the book "proofed." Of course, proofing will continue after that point as readers continue to report typos.

Entering Special Characters

To insert special character such as umlauts, em-dashes, smart quotes, etc., it is possible to copy/paste the character, but if the source you are copying from uses the wrong character encoding, you'll get garbled text when the page is reloaded. Also, an earlier recommendation of an alt-number key combination doesn't work in this case, because it also generates text using the wrong encoding.

The safest way to insert special characters is to use a code called an "escape sequence". For example, em-dash is & #8212; [without the space between the ampersand and the rest of the sequence]. A smart left double quote is & #8220;

Here is a chart containing many common escapes.

If the character you want isn't represented in that chart, contact us for further info or, if you can figure it out, use the official Unicode character charts and convert the hex code to decimal using a hex-to-decimal calculator. For example, to enter the first character on the Bengali chart, you'd note the code (0990 hex). You'd enter it into the hex section of the calculator and learn that the decimal is 2448. Then you'd enter & #2448; (ঐ).
