THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING - THE SECOND CHAPTER

...hold thee never the holier nor the better, for the worthiness of this calling and for the singular form of living that thou art in.

Meekness
Hi Lou,
When we look to the Bible for the word “meek” we find that Moses is said to have been meek. The Hebrew word means “depressed (figuratively), in mind (gentle) or circumstances (needy, especially saintly): - humble, lowly, meek, poor” (Strongs). The same word is used in a number of instances in which such people are praised:
“The meek will he guide in justice; And the meek will he teach his way.” (Psa 25:9)
“… the meek shall inherit the land, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” (Psa 37:11)
“The Spirit of the Lord Everlasting is upon me; because the Everlasting One hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to gird the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the freedom to those who are restricted …” (Isa 61:1)
We can see from the two last quotes that they are also quotes that Jesus is said to have made:
“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” (Mat 5:5)
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor: He hath sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and a recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. (Luk 4:18-19)
The Greek word here means “mild, that is, (by implication) humble: - meek” (Strongs) which is also a provision for spirituality in Buddhism, Taoism and many other traditions. Jesus also said, “… learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” I think there is no other way.
Aggression, any offensive action, attack, inroad or encroachment, is negative activism and is, in my mind, the opposite of meekness. If we want to bring the subject of being on guard against our enemies, we must ask where do these enemies come from and where do they find a weak point. My experience is that my “demons” are within and can only be purged by not feeding them. The more I pay attention to them, the more strength they have.
Shalom
