see Jeremiah 31

The "new covenant" Jesus spoke of was in reference to the prophecy recorded in Jeremiah 31:31 - 34. He was speaking of the remission of sins that would come through His atoning sacrifice on the cross. (Rom 3:25, Rom 5:9, Col 1:20) At the time that He was saying this, He was ending the Passover and would then head off to Mount of Olives. (Matt 26:26 - 30)

It's good to note that during the Passover meal they would drink four cups of blessing throughout the meal. The four cups were in reference to the four "I will"s of Exodus 6:6 - 7. "I will bring you out..", "I will rescue you...", "I will redeem you with an outstretched arm...". This was the third cup and also speaks of the redemption of man through His crucifixion. This is the new covenant. The fourth cup, which He says that He will not drink of aligns with the fourth "I will" and this is what we look forward to in the future, "I will take you..."

Throughout this discourse, Jesus was holding the items that He was speaking about. He was holding a piece of bread when He said, "This is my body." and he was holding a cup of wine when He said, "This is my blood." He was demonstrating that He was the fulfillment of all that the Passover meal was remembering in the past and looking forward to in the future.

Unfortunately we spend too much time debating the elements rather than doing the very thing that He instructed us to do..."This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes." 1 Cor 11:25, 26
