Just a note that on the cover art of the audio cd of Epistle of Barnabas, "Epistle" is misspelled. David Horner

Epistle of Barnabas

Maybe this forum is not really asking for comments but here goes.

After a quick reading, here are some comments.
He quotes a lot of Scripture - good.
He mentions the atonement of Christ - good.
Beginning in chapter 10, he comments on a passage in Deut.
which lists various animals the Israelites are not supposed
to eat. He proceeds to make these into symbols representing
something else - BAD . . . Why? Rule of interpreting Scripture -
do not seek a symbolical/allegorical view of a Scripture passage
unless it appears to indicate otherwise i.e. much of the book of
Revelation.
In 12:6, he likens Moses creating the brass serpent to the breaking
of the command "Do not make any graven images." I would not agree
with his interpretation. He did not make it to be representative of
God. Its worship was condemned as was seen when it was finally destroyed
by one of the good kings of Judah.
He predicts in 15:4 that the earth will end in 6000 years. If he takes that
from the beginning of the world, conservative and liberal scholarship would
show that he falsely predicted the end of the world. - Bad.
Seems to suggest works-righteousness in 19:1-12 - Bad
I would probably term his "epistle" more of a commentary on Scripture because
that seems to be more the style of what he is doing.
On a lighter note, we have sadly departed the practice of the early church
in rejoicing on the eighth day (Monday). Barnabas 15:9 :)
Is it just me or is he a little ADD in his writing?

from extended study.
