Comments on An Exposition of the Epistle of James

where does this text come from? it's not the original work

Folks, lest anyone think this is the original work by Manton, it can't be. First, it quotes the NIV. Second, as if the rest of the text didn't read too modern for the 1600's, it's also clearly a substantial abridgement. Compare even the first paragraphs of this to the Google Books version (which while from 1840 at least seems more likely an exact rendering of the original), or this alternative rendering which seems to present (in HTML) the same text as the Google Books version. You will see that these latter two are quite different from the book offered here at CCEL.

Yet nothing in the information on the book here at CCEL suggests that it's anything other than the original.

I love CCEL, so this is no condemnation of the service. And it may be that this modern rendering offers a more accessible introduction to Manton's work, but it's clearly not the original.

I'm just a) wanting to warn those who may presume this is the original work (that it's abridged and modernized) and b) hoping to get more details offered here for this book. For instance, who did modernize/abridge it? The copyright shows CCEL, but no name is attached. And before one presumes they may be able to copy or record it, this does not appear to be in the public domain (given the copyright mentioned).

Or did I miss something that did explain these matters?
