John 21:16

In John 21:16, Jesus asked Simon Peter "Do you love me more than these" and Peter replied 3x that "Yes, Lord; You know that I love you." Why did Jesus asked Peter same question 3x? What kind of love Jesus is asking to Peter?

agape love

Viviana,
In the Greek text, the first two times Jesus asks Peter he uses the word phileo which is fraternal love but the third time he uses agape which is the Greek word for divine love. I believe Jesus is leading Peter into a deeper faith and relationship with Him and the sheep. He is also testing Peter to see if his commitment is fuller than when Peter denied Christ which was also a three time statement.
