Medieval languages

Hi all-

I am interested in learning more about medieval ideas and wanted to know more about the languages spoken in the Holy roman empire, although it was mostly german. So far I have found out that Latin was an official language for a long time, but the last 200 years german was more dominant. I tend to think that the reformation had something to do with the language change. I don't know if I have time to learn both latin and german (or desire!), but I think that to understand what the monks were learning at that time would be invaluable to Christians. Thanks for your help!

tug and pull

there seems to have been a tug and pull between works like existentialism and medeival ideas. I agree to some extent that the roman catholic church had monks that were true to the gospel and undoubtedly produced some great works of faith. I guess the knock on that period though was the corruption in Rome, with the indulgences. It seems to me that the emphasis of death concerning existentialism is a reaction to the grip that Rome had on europe, even though they were previously a conquered people, which is a baffling but interesting paradox to me.

That said, I think the two churches are becoming closer, and I believe there is hope for reconciliation, I guess that is really what drives my desire to be informed on both sides of te conversation, and I thank you for your offer on the Aquinas study, I know very little about his teaching because I have stuck with calvin and more recent authors like Ericson and Grudem. I think I would need encouragement to read his works because I have studied Ericsons and Grudems sys theo's in college for years and feel that I know what Aquinas says without looking at his summa and I sometimes get discouraged when I read something that I have already heard of before, but I do think that a directed discussion would be an interesting idea, do you have any suggestions on chapters that might be interesting?

Thanks for your time
Steve
