Daily Light's Evening Reading

One God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.I TIM. 2:5.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.—A mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly. Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies . . . Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.

He is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

Spurgeon's Evening Reading

“The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks.”

Proverbs 30:26

Conscious of their own natural defencelessness, the conies resort to burrows in the rocks, and are secure from their enemies. My heart, be willing to gather a lesson from these feeble folk. Thou art as weak and as exposed to peril as the timid cony; be as wise to seek a shelter. My best security is within the munitions of an immutable Jehovah, where his unalterable promises stand like giant walls of rock. It will be well with thee, my heart, if thou canst always hide thyself in the bulwarks of his glorious attributes, all of which are guarantees of safety for those who put their trust in him. Blessed be the name of the Lord, I have so done, and have found myself like David in Adullam, safe from the cruelty of my enemy; I have not now to find out the blessedness of the man who puts his trust in the Lord, for long ago, when Satan and my sins pursued me, I fled to the cleft of the rock Christ Jesus, and in his riven side I found a delightful resting-place. My heart, run to him anew tonight, whatever thy present grief may be; Jesus feels for thee; Jesus consoles thee; Jesus will help thee. No monarch in his impregnable fortress is more secure than the cony in his rocky burrow. The master of ten thousand chariots is not one whit better protected than the little dweller in the mountain’s cleft. In Jesus the weak are strong, and the defenceless safe; they could not be more strong if they were giants, or more safe if they were in heaven. Faith gives to men on earth the protection of the God of heaven. More they cannot need, and need not wish. The conies cannot build a castle, but they avail themselves of what is there already: I cannot make myself a refuge, but Jesus has provided it, his Father has given it, his Spirit has revealed it, and lo, again tonight I enter it, and am safe from every foe.

Old Testament Chapter a Day - 2 Samuel 22

2 Samuel 22

22. David's Song of Praise

David’s Song of Thanksgiving

22

David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.2He said:

The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,

3

my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,

my shield and the horn of my salvation,

my stronghold and my refuge,

my savior; you save me from violence.

4

I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,

and I am saved from my enemies.

5

For the waves of death encompassed me,

the torrents of perdition assailed me;

6

the cords of Sheol entangled me,

the snares of death confronted me.

7

In my distress I called upon the Lord;

to my God I called.

From his temple he heard my voice,

and my cry came to his ears.

8

Then the earth reeled and rocked;

the foundations of the heavens trembled

and quaked, because he was angry.

9

Smoke went up from his nostrils,

and devouring fire from his mouth;

glowing coals flamed forth from him.

10

He bowed the heavens, and came down;

thick darkness was under his feet.

11

He rode on a cherub, and flew;

he was seen upon the wings of the wind.

12

He made darkness around him a canopy,

thick clouds, a gathering of water.

13

Out of the brightness before him

coals of fire flamed forth.

14

The Lord thundered from heaven;

the Most High uttered his voice.

15

He sent out arrows, and scattered them

—lightning, and routed them.

16

Then the channels of the sea were seen,

the foundations of the world were laid bare

at the rebuke of the Lord,

at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

17

He reached from on high, he took me,

he drew me out of mighty waters.

18

He delivered me from my strong enemy,

from those who hated me;

for they were too mighty for me.

19

They came upon me in the day of my calamity,

but the Lord was my stay.

20

He brought me out into a broad place;

he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

21

The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;

according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me.

22

For I have kept the ways of the Lord,

and have not wickedly departed from my God.

23

For all his ordinances were before me,

and from his statutes I did not turn aside.

24

I was blameless before him,

and I kept myself from guilt.

25

Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness,

according to my cleanness in his sight.

26

With the loyal you show yourself loyal;

with the blameless you show yourself blameless;

27

with the pure you show yourself pure,

and with the crooked you show yourself perverse.

28

You deliver a humble people,

but your eyes are upon the haughty to bring them down.

29

Indeed, you are my lamp, O Lord,

the Lord lightens my darkness.

30

By you I can crush a troop,

and by my God I can leap over a wall.

31

This God—his way is perfect;

the promise of the Lord proves true;

he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.

32

For who is God, but the Lord?

And who is a rock, except our God?

33

The God who has girded me with strength

has opened wide my path.

34

He made my feet like the feet of deer,

and set me secure on the heights.

35

He trains my hands for war,

so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

36

You have given me the shield of your salvation,

and your help has made me great.

37

You have made me stride freely,

and my feet do not slip;

38

I pursued my enemies and destroyed them,

and did not turn back until they were consumed.

39

I consumed them; I struck them down, so that they did not rise;

they fell under my feet.

40

For you girded me with strength for the battle;

you made my assailants sink under me.

41

You made my enemies turn their backs to me,

those who hated me, and I destroyed them.

42

They looked, but there was no one to save them;

they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.

43

I beat them fine like the dust of the earth,

I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets.

44

You delivered me from strife with the peoples;

you kept me as the head of the nations;

people whom I had not known served me.

45

Foreigners came cringing to me;

as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me.

46

Foreigners lost heart,

and came trembling out of their strongholds.

47

The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,

and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,

48

the God who gave me vengeance

and brought down peoples under me,

49

who brought me out from my enemies;

you exalted me above my adversaries,

you delivered me from the violent.

50

For this I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations,

and sing praises to your name.

51

He is a tower of salvation for his king,

and shows steadfast love to his anointed,

to David and his descendants forever.

New Testament in Four Years - Colossians 2:9-12

Colossians 2:9-12

2. Freedom Through Life in Christ

9For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,10and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority.11In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual circumcision, by putting off the body of the flesh in the circumcision of Christ;12when you were buried with him in baptism, you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

Psalm a Day - Psalm 106:34-48

Psalm 106:34-48

106. Psalm 106

34

They did not destroy the peoples,

as the Lord commanded them,

35

but they mingled with the nations

and learned to do as they did.

36

They served their idols,

which became a snare to them.

37

They sacrificed their sons

and their daughters to the demons;

38

they poured out innocent blood,

the blood of their sons and daughters,

whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;

and the land was polluted with blood.

39

Thus they became unclean by their acts,

and prostituted themselves in their doings.

40

Then the anger of the Lord was kindled against his people,

and he abhorred his heritage;

41

he gave them into the hand of the nations,

so that those who hated them ruled over them.

42

Their enemies oppressed them,

and they were brought into subjection under their power.

43

Many times he delivered them,

but they were rebellious in their purposes,

and were brought low through their iniquity.

44

Nevertheless he regarded their distress

when he heard their cry.

45

For their sake he remembered his covenant,

and showed compassion according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

46

He caused them to be pitied

by all who held them captive.

47

Save us, O Lord our God,

and gather us from among the nations,

that we may give thanks to your holy name

and glory in your praise.

48

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,

from everlasting to everlasting.

And let all the people say, “Amen.”

Praise the Lord!
