Daily Light's Evening Reading

I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it; and, behold, the half was not told me.I KGS. 10:7.

The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.—We beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

My speech and my preaching was . . . in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Thine eyes shall see the King in his beauty.—We shall see him as he is.—In my flesh I shall see God.—I shall be satisfied.

Spurgeon's Evening Reading

“Thou art from everlasting.”

Psalm 93:2

Christ is Everlasting. Of him we may sing with David, “Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever.” Rejoice, believer, in Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus always was. The Babe born in Bethlehem was united to the Word, which was in the beginning, by whom all things were made. The title by which Christ revealed himself to John in Patmos was, “Him which is, and which was, and which is to come.” If he were not God from everlasting, we could not so devoutly love him; we could not feel that he had any share in the eternal love which is the fountain of all covenant blessings; but since he was from all eternity with the Father, we trace the stream of divine love to himself equally with his Father and the blessed Spirit. As our Lord always was, so also he is for evermore. Jesus is not dead; “He ever liveth to make intercession for us.” Resort to him in all your times of need, for he is waiting to bless you still. Moreover, Jesus our Lord ever shall be. If God should spare your life to fulfil your full day of threescore years and ten, you will find that his cleansing fountain is still opened, and his precious blood has not lost its power; you shall find that the Priest who filled the healing fount with his own blood, lives to purge you from all iniquity. When only your last battle remains to be fought, you shall find that the hand of your conquering Captain has not grown feeble—the living Saviour shall cheer the dying saint. When you enter heaven you shall find him there bearing the dew of his youth; and through eternity the Lord Jesus shall still remain the perennial spring of joy, and life, and glory to his people. Living waters may you draw from this sacred well! Jesus always was, he always is, he always shall be. He is eternal in all his attributes, in all his offices, in all his might, and willingness to bless, comfort, guard, and crown his chosen people.

Old Testament Chapter a Day — Numbers 4

Numbers 4

4. Levite Clans

1And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 2Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers' houses, 3from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. 4This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting, about the most holy things: 5when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall go in, and his sons, and they shall take down the veil of the screen, and cover the ark of the testimony with it, 6and shall put thereon a covering of sealskin, and shall spread over it a cloth all of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof. 7And upon the table of showbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls and the cups wherewith to pour out; and the continual bread shall be thereon: 8and they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof. 9And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and its lamps, and its snuffers, and its snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it: 10and they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of sealskin, and shall put it upon the frame. 11And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of sealskin, and shall put in the staves thereof: 12and they shall take all the vessels of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of sealskin, and shall put them on the frame. 13And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon: 14and they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, the firepans, the flesh-hooks, and the shovels, and the basins, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of sealskin, and put in the staves thereof. 15And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the furniture of the sanctuary, as the camp is set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch the sanctuary, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting. 16And the charge of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the continual meal-offering, and the anointing oil, the charge of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, the sanctuary, and the furniture thereof.

17And Jehovah spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, 18Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites; 19but thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden; 20but they shall not go in to see the sanctuary even for a moment, lest they die.

21And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 22Take the sum of the sons of Gershon also, by their fathers' houses, by their families; 23from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to wait upon the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting. 24This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving and in bearing burdens: 25they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tent of meeting, its covering, and the covering of sealskin that is above upon it, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting, 26and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and whatsoever shall be done with them: therein shall they serve. 27At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burden, and in all their service; and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burden. 28This is the service of the families of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

29As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them by their families, by their fathers' houses; 30from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth upon the service, to do the work of the tent of meeting. 31And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, 32and the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall appoint the instruments of the charge of their burden. 33This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tent of meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

34And Moses and Aaron and the princes of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites by their families, and by their fathers' houses, 35from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting: 36and those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 37These are they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that did serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Jehovah by Moses. 38And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, their families, and by their fathers' houses, 39from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting, 40even those that were numbered of them, by their families, by their fathers' houses, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty. 41These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, all that did serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Jehovah.

42And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers' houses, 43from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered upon the service, for work in the tent of meeting, 44even those that were numbered of them by their families, were three thousand and two hundred. 45These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Jehovah by Moses.

46All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the princes of Israel numbered, by their families, and by their fathers' houses, 47from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entered in to do the work of service, and the work of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting, 48even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore. 49According to the commandment of Jehovah they were numbered by Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

New Testament in Four Years — John 5:41-44

John 5:41-44

41I receive not glory from men. 42But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in yourselves. 43I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 44How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that cometh from the only God ye seek not?

Psalm a Day — Psalm 109:16-31

Psalm 109:16-31

16Because he remembered not to show kindness,

But persecuted the poor and needy man,

And the broken in heart, to slay them.

17Yea, he loved cursing, and it came unto him;

And he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him.

18He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment,

And it came into his inward parts like water,

And like oil into his bones.

19Let it be unto him as the raiment wherewith he covereth himself,

And for the girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

20This is the reward of mine adversaries from Jehovah,

And of them that speak evil against my soul.

21But deal thou with me, O Jehovah the Lord, for thy name's sake:

Because thy lovingkindness is good, deliver thou me;

22For I am poor and needy,

And my heart is wounded within me.

23I am gone like the shadow when it adeclineth:

I am tossed up and down as the locust.

24My knees aare weak through fasting;

And my flesh faileth of fatness.

25I am become also a reproach unto them:

When they see me, they shake their head.

26Help me, O Jehovah my God;

Oh save me according to thy lovingkindness:

27That they may know that this is thy hand;

That thou, Jehovah, hast done it.

28Let them curse, but bless thou:

When they arise, they shall be put to shame,

But thy servant shall rejoice.

29 aLet mine adversaries be clothed with dishonor,

And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

30I will give great thanks unto Jehovah with my mouth;

Yea, I will praise him among the multitude.

31For he will stand at the right hand of the needy,

To save him from them that judge his soul.
