Biography

Benjamin Franklin (B. F.) White was born in South Carolina. He had eleven older siblings. Gifted with musical skills, he came to be known as the “singing master.” White published The Sacred Harp which was a compilation of songs using the four-shape system of notation. This work would go through many additions and editions. He oversaw the publication of Harris County’s first newspaper, The Organ. White and his wife had nine children and several of them became well-known Sacred Harp singing circles. In December of 1879, Benjamin Franklin White passed away leaving the world his gift of song.
