Biography

The Holiness Movement was in part due to the work of Thomas Cogswell Upham. Born in 1799, Upham would wear many mantels throughout his life including philosopher, psychologist, poet, professor, and author. Mental Philosophy is one of his more renowned works. As a pacifist and abolitionist, Upham wanted all of society to live in harmony. He wrote The Manual of Peace. Upham wrote several hymns. Having suffered a stroke, Upham passed away in 1872. His last words were, “My soul…is with God.”
