Atwater, Lyman Hotchkiss

ATWATER, LYMAN HOTCHKISS: Presbyterian; b. at Hamden, Conn., Feb. 23, 1813; d. at Princeton, N. J., Feb. 17, 1883. He was graduated at Yale 1831; was tutor there and student of divinity 1833–35; pastor of the First Congregational Church, Fairfield, Conn., 1835–54; professor (at first of mental and moral philosophy, after 1869 of logic and moral and political science) at Princeton College, 1854 till his death. He was also lecturer in Princeton Seminary and acting president of the college. He contributed many articles to the religious reviews and was one of the editors of the Biblical Repertory (1869–71) and its continuation (from 1872), the Presbyterian Quarterly and Princeton Review. He published a Manual of Elementary Logic (Philadelphia, 1867).
