Wells, Marcus Morris, is the author of one
of our most popular modern hymns on the
Holy Spirit and also the composer of the
tune to which it is universally sung. Beyond
the published date of his birth (1815)
and his death (1895) and the statement
that he was a lawyer living in the State
of New York, we have no facts concerning
him. It is hoped that some facts may be
learned about him which may be incorporated
in later editions of this volume.
The date assigned to the hymn by Mr. Ira
D. Sankey is 1858. It is to be regretted
that we have not other hymns and tunes
from one who can write devotional poetry
and music such as that represented by the
single hymn and tune which we have here from his pen.
