Plumptree, Edward Hayes, an eminent English
clergyman, author, and professor of
theology, was born in London August 6,
1821. He was educated at King's College,
London, and at University College, Oxford,
graduating in 1844. He entered the ministry
in 1846, and speedily rose to a position
of influence in the Church. He was a noted
scholar, the author of numerous works in
both prose and poetry. He was a member
of the Commission on the revision of the
Old Testament. His hymns are few in
number but elegant in style, fervent in spirit,
and popular with hymnists. Dr. Plumptree
became Dean of Wells in 1881. He
died February 1, 1891.
