John of Damascus was the greatest theologian
and poet of the Greek Church. His
active life belonged to the eighth century,
but the exact dates of his birth and death
are unknown. His work on theology, Doctrines
of the Orthodox Church, is still a
standard textbook in the Eastern Church.
He was famous as a philosopher and as an
opponent of the Iconoclasts of his time.
Late in life he was ordained priest of the
Church at Jerusalem.
