416Herbert, George, a noted English poet and
devotedly pious clergyman of the Church
of England, was born at Montgomery Castle,
Wales, April 3, 1593; was graduated at
Trinity College, Cambridge; was a pastor
at Layton Ecclesia, in 1626, and at Bemerton
from 1630 to his death, in 1632. He
occupied his moments of leisure in the cultivation
of sacred music. The following
hymn is in keeping with the spirit of consecration
and the heavenly-mindedness that
marked his Christian life:
