Hatfield, Edwin Francis, a prominent clergyman
of the Presbyterian Church, was
born at Elizabethtown, N. J., January 9,
1807; was graduated at Middlebury College,
and studied theology at Andover. He was
ordained in 1832. He was a Pastor in St.
Louis three years; in New York (Seventh
Church) twenty-one years; and of North
Church, in the same city, seven years.
Failing health compelled him to give up
the pastorate. Dr. Hatfield was an able
writer and a useful man. He died at Summit,
N. J., September 22, 1883. He is the
author of a valuable and well-known volume
titled The Poets of the Church, being
a series of biographical sketches of hymn
writers, with notes on their hymns. it
was published in 1884, the year after his death.
