Bridges, Matthew, was an Englishman born
at Malden, Essex, England, July 14, 1800.
He was educated in the Church of England,
but became a convert to the Church
of Rome in connection with the famous
Tractarian movement led by
Cardinal Newman
and others. For several years before
his death he resided in the province of
Quebec, Canada, where he died October 6,
1894. He was the author of several books,
the most valuable of which is Hymns of the Heart, 1848.
