On Select Passages of Scripture
When Adam fell he quickly lost
By faith in CHRIST I walk with God
How hurtful was the choice of Lot
The saints should never be dismayed
In mercy, not in wrath, rebuke
How tedious and tasteless the hours
Incarnate God! the soul that knows
That man no guard or weapons needs
When Israel was from Egypt freed
How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
He who on earth as man was known
Glorious things of thee are spoken
As the serpent raised by Moses
Pensive, doubting, fearful heart
Oft as the leper’s case I read
When Jesus claims the sinner’s heart
Ye sons of earth prepare the plow
Though in the outward church below
A Word from JESUS calms the sea
Could the creatures help or ease us
When the disciples crossed the lake
Martha her love and joy expressed
My barns are full, my stores increase
Afflictions, though they seem severe;
Simon, beware! the Savior said
Jesus, to what didst thou submit
Here at Bethesda’s pool, the poor
Constrained by their LORD to embark
I Am, saith CHRIST our glorious head
As some tall rock amidst the waves
Lord, thou hast won, at length I yield
Now, gracious Lord, thine arm reveal
Bestow, dear Lord, upon our youth
When Peter through the tedious night
Sin has undone our wretched race
Gracious Lord, our children see
The Shunemite, oppressed with grief
Does it not grief, and wonder move
Preachers may, from Ezekiel’s case
When Moses waved his mystic rod
The God who once to Israel spoke
O David’s Son, and David’s Lord!
Let us adore the grace that seeks
Jesus, who bought us with his blood
Ensnared, too long, my heart has been
Beneath the tyrant Satan’s yoke
Thy message, by the preacher, seal
When Paul was parted from his friends
See, how rude winter’s icy hand
Though cloudy skies, and northern blasts
Bleak winter is subdued at length
Pleasing spring again is here!
Sweeter founds than music knows
My song shall bless the LORD of all
O LORD, our languid souls inspire
Jesus, where’er thy people meet
How welcome to the saints, when pressed
O happy they who know the Lord
Happy are they, to whom the LORD
Once, while we aimed at Zion’s songs
Gladness was spread through Israel’s host
O, may the pow’r which melts the rock
While Joshua led the armed bands
See the gloomy gath’ring cloud
Although on massy pillars built
Wearied by day with toils and cares
In vain my fancy strives to paint
His master taken from his head
Oft as the bell, with solemn toll
My soul, this curious house of clay
Courage, my soul! behold the prize
Day of judgment, day of wonders!
That was a wonder–working word
When the sun, with cheerful beams
When a black overspreading cloud
A Glance from heav’n, with sweet effect
The moon in silver glory shone
The moon has but a borrowed light
Though small the drops of falling rain
The ice and snow we lately saw
As needles point towards the pole
On the same flow’r we often see
The subtle spider often weaves
The Savior calls his people sheep
A Shelter from the rain or wind
The water stood like walls of brass
When slumber seals our weary eyes
I. Solemn Addresses to Sinners.
II. Seeking, Pleading, and Hoping.
Breathe from the gentle South, O LORD
Cheer up, my soul, there is a mercy–seat
Approach, my soul, the mercy–seat
The billows swell the winds are high
God of my life, to thee I call
My soul is sad and much dismayed;
’Tis past—the dreadful stormy night
Unless the LORD had been my stay
When darkness long has veiled my mind
When my prayers are a burden and task
Dear Lord accept a sinful heart
Lord, who hast suffered all for me
O Lord, my best desire fulfill
When my Savior, my Shepherd is near
Return to bless my waiting eyes
Though sore beset with guilt and fear
Forest beasts, that live by prey
When the poor pris’ner through a grate
I asked the LORD that I might grow
Be still my heart! these anxious cares
Sight, hearing, feeling, taste and smell
How blest thy creature is, O God
Far from the world, O Lord, I flee
Why should I fear the darkest hour
To tell the Savior all my wants
Lord my soul with pleasure springs
I was a groveling creature once
Yes! since God himself has said it
O, speak that gracious word again
While I lived without the Lord
When Hagar found the bottle spent
Let worldly minds the world pursue
Happy the birth where grace presides
I thirst, but not as once I did
No strength of nature can suffice
Holy LORD GOD! I love thy truth
Fix my heart and eyes on thine!
The new–born child of gospel–grace
Zeal is that pure and heav’nly flame
The LORD receives his highest praise
Too many, LORD, abuse thy grace
What thousands never knew the road!
Grace, triumphant in the throne
Sin, when viewed by scripture light
The wishes that the sluggard frames
Of all the gifts thine hand bestows
Almighty King! whose wondrous hand
Let us love, and sing, and wonder
Rejoice, believer, in the LORD
Salvation! what a glorious plan
Now may the LORD reveal his face
VIII. SHORT HYMNS: BEFORE SERMON.
Confirm the hope thy word allows
Now, LORD, inspire the preacher’s heart
Thy promise, LORD, and thy command
With Israel’s God who can compare?
JESUS is mine! I’m now prepared
We seek a rest beyond the skies
The saints EMMANUEL’S portion are
May the grace of CHRIST our Savior
