Biography

John Stuart Mill of England was born in May of 1806. Mill’s teacher was his father who introduced John to philosophy, mathematics, history, literature, and language. Mill was a utilitarian as well as a renowned economist. His book, Principles of Political Economy was the standard for many years. While Mill respected Jesus Christ, he is considered by many to be an agnostic. He would not subscribe to the Church of England’s 39 Articles. He worked for the East India Company for many years. He also served as the University of St. Andrew’s Lord Rector. Mill was politically active in the Liberal Party and was a member of Parliament from 1865 to 1868. Fighting depression and even suicidal thoughts, Mills found “joy” in William Wordsworth’s poetry. Mill’s body of work includes his autobiography and The Subjection of Women. Just shy of his 67th birthday, Mill died in France on May 7, 1873.
