Thomas Wingfold, Curate

The main character in this George MacDonald novel is Thomas Wingfold. As the title states, Wingfold is a curate (a clergyman). The story revolves around his personal spiritual journey from doubt to faith. What makes this an engaging plot is the tension between a pastor with personal doubts and a congregation looking to him for spiritual guidance. MacDonald introduces Polwarth, a dwarf in physical stature but a giant in the knowledge of the truth. Set in England, this lengthy novel can move slowly, with more than a dozen pages filled with a single sermon delivered by Wingfold. Those who stick with it are rewarded with a completed journey of faith found.
