This Gothic chieftain is called, by Jornandes and Isidore, Athaulphus; by Zosimus and Orosius,Ataulphus; and by Olympiodorus, Adaoulphus. I have used the celebrated name of Adolphus, which seems to be authorised by the practice of the Swedes, the sons or brothers of the ancient Goths.
