Biography

Frances Elizabeth Cox is best known for her translation of German hymns into English. She lived in Oxford, England for most if not all of her life. Her church membership was with the Anglican Church. She was born in 1812 and died in 1897. With the encouragement and backing of Baron Chevalier Bunsen (a Prussian Ambassador) Cox was able to publish Sacred Hymns from the German (1841) and Hymns from the German (1864). Given access to Bunsen’s large collection of German hymns, Cox selected several dozen for translation and publication.
