Napoleon of Notting Hill

by Gilbert Keith Chesterton

Summary

The year was 1904 when G.K. Chesterton wrote his book set in the year 1984. The book was titled, The Napoleon of Notting Hill. The book satirically addresses the successions of English monarchs who are ineffective when it comes to governing. In Chesterton's book he develops the character one king who entertains himself by requiring the London provosts to adorn themselves with embellished costumes. All the provosts except one are unimpressed with the king's leadership. The one who does stand tall for his district is Adam Wayne and hence earns the nickname, Napoleon of Notting Hill. The book became an inspiration to the leader of those who wanted Ireland to become independent.
