Biography

While many people viewed the “Great Awakening” in a positive manner, Charles Chauncy did not. As a Boston minister, he wanted to keep worship as it was, steeped in tradition and formality. Born in England in 1592, Chauncy received much of his education in England. In 1937 he immigrated to the United States where he pastored various churches and eventually became president of Harvard College. Chauncy died in 1671. In addition to many of his sermons being published, he published several books including Seasonable Thoughts on the State of Religion in New England (1743). At the age of 82, Chauncy passed away on February 10, 1787, in Boston, Massachusetts.
