Biography

German-born Rudolf Bultmann would challenge the accepted view of New Testament interpretation as it related to Jesus. Bultmann put more emphasis on the message of the Gospels than the historical details and relevance of Jesus Christ. His approach was to “demythologize” the New Testament. He believed Christian faith should be more based on the “proclamation” of Jesus through the gospels as opposed to a faith-based in the “person” of Jesus. A renowned scholar and teacher, he was a New Testament Professor for three decades at the University of Marburg. He survived the Nazi control of the church and Hitler’s regime. His writings include History of the Synoptic Tradition (1921) and Jesus and the Word (1934).Bultmann lived 91 years (1884-1976).
