The American Standard Version (ASV) came into being due to the leadership of eminent church historian Phillip Schaff, who assembled a team comprised of 30 American and British scholars. Work began on the ASV in 1872 and was completed in 1901. The translation committee was tasked with the mission of providing readers with an accurate, literal, word-for-word translation of the Holy Scriptures.

The ASV took advantage of two 19th century developments to achieve their goal: improvements in understanding the grammar and syntax of koine Greek (the language of the New Testament), and a more complete library of manuscripts than previous Bible translators were able to access. The result of this work was a translation that retained distinctions made in Greek that are not normally expressed in modern English language.

For example, second person personal pronouns in modern English usage are normally “you” which provides no distinction between the singular and plural. Koine Greek unambiguously makes the distinction between a second person personal singular pronoun and the second person personal plural pronoun. In this instance committee retained these distinctions by using archaic English (“you” for the singular and “ye” for the plural).

The word-for-word translation of the ASV was attractive in the scholarly environment, and the ASV was adopted as the standard version used by many American seminaries. However, since the committee took less license in translation and retained archaic English usages, the ASV is not as easily readable as other modern versions. As a result, the ASV has not been as successful among lay Christians as it has been in the scholarly community.

Cebuano is the second most widely spoken native language of the Philippines. The complete Cebuano Bible was first published in 1917. This Bible is published today as the Ang Biblia, Cebuano by the Philippine Bible Society. Two separate versions are available: The 'Pinadayag' version contains a completely revised New Testament, the 'Bugna' version contains the original New Testament from 1917. Both versions share the same Old Testament text. The 'Bugna' designation is derived from the Cebuano name given to the book of Revelation. The New Testament text generally follows the same Greek Received Text, which was used as a basis for the King James Version. Because of its similarity with the KJV it is also called the Cebuano King James Version. Introductions, titles, paragraphs, and the like were not available. Therefore this file would benefit from additional work by someone who has access to a print edition.

This Bible translation represents the official Swedish translation of 1917, authorized by the throne for use in the Church of Sweden. It was converted automatically from data files made available by the Unbound Bible project but lacking documentation (Swedish book names, chapter headings, paragraph delimiters, etc.). Project Runeberg offers a complete version. The revision of 2000 is copyrighted but can be viewed online at Bibeln.se.

Young’s translation of the Bible seeks to render the original Hebrew and Greek texts as literally as possible. As Young saw it, any change in meaning, verb tense, article usage, etc. would nullify whatever value the Bible had. In the preface to the second edition of his translation, he wrote that, should someone alter but one thing, “the Word of God is made void by the traditions of men.” During Young’s time, people used his translation as a biblical study tool especially, and some still use updated versions of it for similar purposes today. For those who cannot read Hebrew or Greek, this translation—arguably the most literal English translation to date—can give them at least a sense of the nuances of the biblical languages.

The King James or Authorized version of the Holy Bible, created by the Church of England in 1604, quickly became the standard for English-speaking protestants. Like the original version, this edition includes the Apocrypha.
